Rule of Thumb: Choose HDPE for economical general-purpose fabrication where stiffness and chemical resistance matter. Choose UHMW when you need maximum abrasion resistance, impact strength, and a slick wear surface for sliding and scraping.
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
HDPE is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a density typically between 0.941 and 0.965 g/cm³, providing a practical balance of stiffness, tensile strength, and broad chemical resistance. It machines and welds cleanly, accepts a wide range of fabrication techniques, and is available in numerous thicknesses, colors, and grades including food-contact and marine-rated variants. HDPE is the appropriate choice when dimensional stability, structural rigidity, and cost-efficiency are the primary requirements;particularly in tanks, structural panels, cutting surfaces, and outdoor components.
UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)
UHMW is a linear polyethylene with a molecular weight typically between 3.5 and 7.5 million g/mol—significantly higher than standard HDPE—which produces exceptional abrasion resistance, high impact toughness, and a low coefficient of friction. These properties make it the material of choice for wear-intensive applications including conveyor guides, chute and hopper liners, wear strips, and impact pads. Compared to HDPE, UHMW offers superior performance in sliding and abrasive contact but is less rigid, more susceptible to creep under sustained load, and generally more difficult to machine to close tolerances.
