Overview

Description

HDPE rod is a lightweight, durable plastic rod stock commonly selected for machined parts, spacers, bushings, guides, fixtures, and other components where toughness, low moisture absorption, and chemical resistance are important. High-density polyethylene offers a practical balance of impact resistance, machinability, and everyday utility, making it useful for both shop fabrication and general project work.

Compared with many harder engineering plastics, HDPE has a softer surface and a slightly waxy feel. This can be helpful for parts that need low friction or easy cleanup, but it also means the material should be evaluated carefully for applications requiring high stiffness, tight structural performance, or strong adhesive bonding.

Cut tolerance: +0.0″ / −0.2″

Advantages

  • Lightweight material: HDPE has a low density, making it easier to handle than many heavier plastic and metal materials.
  • Tough performance: The material is valued for impact resistance and toughness, including use in lower-temperature environments.
  • Low moisture absorption: HDPE absorbs very little water, helping it perform well in damp or washdown-prone settings.
  • Chemical resistance: HDPE is often selected for parts exposed to many acids, bases, and cleaning solutions, depending on concentration, temperature, and service conditions.
  • Good electrical insulating properties: The material can be useful in applications where electrical insulation is a consideration.
  • Machinable rod stock: HDPE rod can be cut, drilled, turned, routed, and shaped with appropriate plastic-working tools and techniques.

Applications

  • Machined bushings, rollers, spacers, and wear components
  • Pump, valve, and fluid-handling components
  • Guides, sliding profiles, and low-friction contact parts
  • Fixtures, jigs, supports, and shop-made components
  • Tank, container, and material-handling parts
  • General fabrication projects requiring lightweight plastic rod stock

Material and Color Guidance

This product family includes HDPE rods in multiple diameters and colors. Diameter selection should be based on the finished part size, machining allowance, load requirements, and the amount of material that will be removed during fabrication.

Color may affect appearance, identification, and suitability for certain environments. Natural HDPE is commonly used for general-purpose machining and fabrication, but it should not be assumed to be weather resistant unless the specific grade is identified as suitable for that use. For outdoor, regulatory, food-contact, or application-critical projects, verify the selected color and grade before purchasing.

Fabrication and Handling Notes

HDPE machines well with sharp tools and proper chip clearance, but it has lower stiffness than many engineering plastics and may deflect during machining if unsupported. Use appropriate speeds, feeds, and fixturing to reduce heat buildup and improve dimensional consistency.

Bonding HDPE with standard adhesives is limited because of its low surface energy. Mechanical fastening, welding methods suitable for polyethylene, or design-based assembly methods are often preferred when joining is required. High-frequency welding is generally not recommended for HDPE.
