Description
Acetal copolymer rod is round engineering plastic stock for turned and machined parts that need strength, dimensional stability, and low friction. Also known as POM-C, it absorbs very little moisture compared with many other plastics and machines cleanly, so it is widely used for precision components that must hold close tolerances.
The rod is often chosen over metal when lower weight, good wear behavior, and easier machining are important. Typical parts include bearings, bushings, rollers, gears, wear pads, and spacers that need consistent performance in moving or fitted assemblies.
Acetal is known commonly by the trade name Delrin®, but Delrin® is an acetal homopolymer. This listing is copolymer rod. Compared with the homopolymer, the copolymer has better chemical resistance and slightly lower strength.
Advantages
- Low friction: naturally slick surface reduces drag in sliding and rotating parts
- Wear resistance: performs well in both wet and dry environments
- Dimensional stability: low moisture absorption and low creep help turned parts stay true to size
- Machinability: cuts, drills, turns, and mills cleanly for close-tolerance parts
- Strength and toughness: rigid enough for many mechanical components under load
- Chemical resistance: resists many solvents, fuels, and neutral chemicals; not suited to strong acids
- Electrical insulation: used for nonconductive mechanical and electrical components
Applications
- Bearings, bushings, rollers, and sliding parts
- Gears, cams, pulleys, and other mechanical components
- Pump and valve parts
- Food processing and packaging machinery parts
- Wear pads, spacers, guides, and fixtures
- Electrical insulating components
- Jigs, tooling, and replacement parts where machinability and dimensional stability matter
Machining and Fabrication Notes
Acetal copolymer rod suits CNC turning, drilling, milling, and other standard plastic fabrication methods. Sharp tools and appropriate feeds and speeds reduce heat buildup and leave clean edges.
The same slick surface that makes acetal useful in moving parts makes it hard to glue. Mechanical fasteners, press fits, and machined features are usually preferred when the assembly must be strong. If a bonded joint is needed, roughen and clean the surface and use an adhesive intended for acetal.
Buying Considerations
Acetal copolymer is typically rated for continuous service up to about 212°F, so check the operating temperature before specifying it for hot environments. These rods are not UV stabilized and are intended for indoor use. For food-contact or other regulated applications, confirm that the material you order has the required compliance documentation.
