Description

UHMW polyethylene is a tough, low-friction plastic for parts that slide, wear against other surfaces, or take repeated impact. UHMW stands for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Its very long polymer chains give it high wear resistance and a slick surface.

UHMW sheet is commonly used for industrial parts, material handling equipment, guides, liners, and machined components. It can replace metal where a part needs to resist corrosion, slide with less friction, run more quietly, or weigh less.

The natural (white) sheet is virgin UHMW, and the black sheet is a reprocessed grade. For food processing equipment, choose the natural virgin grade and confirm that it meets your compliance requirements.

Buying Considerations

UHMW is chosen mainly for abrasion resistance, impact strength, low friction, and moisture resistance, and it is used mostly for functional parts. Its typical working range is about −60–180°F, and these sheets are not UV stabilized. For tight tolerances, elevated temperatures, heavy loads, long-term outdoor exposure, or specific chemicals, review the operating conditions before choosing the material.

UHMW expands and contracts more than many materials as temperatures change. Allow for movement in long runs, liners, guides, and fastened parts. Depending on the installation, oversized holes, slots, or flexible mounting methods can help.

Fabrication and Handling Notes

UHMW sheet machines on standard woodworking or metalworking equipment when the work is well supported. Sharp carbide-tipped tools give a better surface finish. Clear chips often to keep heat from building up, and use compressed air or a water spray during heavy cuts if needed.
