Description

Polycarbonate sheet, known commonly by trade names such as Lexan®, Tuffak® and Exolon®, is a tough, rigid thermoplastic valued for high impact resistance, good clarity, and practical fabrication. It is often chosen over glass or acrylic when a panel needs to see heavy use without cracking or breaking, and it weighs roughly half as much as glass of the same thickness.

Typical uses include protective panels, machine guards, glazing, signage, and outdoor covers. Polycarbonate keeps its impact strength at low temperatures, and general-purpose grades are rated for service temperatures of −148–248°F (−100–120°C).

Each sheet has removable masking on both sides to limit handling marks during shipping, cutting, and installation. Remove the masking after fabrication and before final use.

Buying Considerations

Clear sheet gives the most light transmission and a glass-like look. The light and dark grey sheets are transparent tints, while black and white are opaque.

The 3⁄4″ (20 mm) sheet is Exolon® Titan, made for machine guards, viewing windows, and covers. Exolon rates it C3 under DIN EN ISO 23125 for impact protection in machine guarding, and it can still be thermoformed and machined for heavy-gauge parts.

Fabrication and Handling Notes

Use sharp blades or bits, keep the sheet well supported, and avoid heat buildup while cutting or drilling. Drill gradually rather than forcing the bit through the material.

Clean with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and mild soap and water. Ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads, and strong solvents can damage the surface. Store sheets flat, or supported on edge, in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight.
