Description

Cast nylon 6 plastic sheet is a tough, machinable engineering plastic for wear parts and mechanical components that need strength combined with low friction. It is commonly used in place of metal bearings and bushings because it is lighter, resists abrasion and impact, and helps reduce operating noise in moving equipment.

The material has high tensile and compressive strength and a naturally low coefficient of friction, which suits parts that slide, roll, guide, or carry load. It can be sawn, drilled, turned, and milled into custom components for repair work, production parts, and prototypes.

Advantages

  • Wear resistance: handles repeated motion, sliding contact, and abrasion
  • Low friction: reduces drag, wear, and operating noise in moving components
  • Mechanical strength: high tensile and compressive strength for bushings, rollers, gears, and wear pads
  • Machinability: can be shaped with common machining methods into custom and replacement parts
  • Weight savings: much lighter than the steel, bronze, or other metal parts it often replaces

Applications

  • Bearings and bushings
  • Gears and sprockets
  • Rollers, wheels, and pulleys, including sheaves used in the mobile crane industry
  • Wear pads for telescoping booms, wear strips, and chute liners
  • Conveyor and material handling components
  • Seals, sliders, and guide parts
  • Machined prototypes and replacement equipment parts

Choosing a Grade

Natural is the standard unfilled grade for general mechanical parts. None of the sheets in this listing, including black, are UV stabilized, so confirm suitability before using them for parts that will spend long periods outdoors. The moly-filled grade contains molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which increases wear resistance and load-bearing capability and reduces wear on mating parts. It is a common choice for crane sheaves, boom wear pads, bushings, and gears in material handling equipment.

Buying and Fabrication Notes

For bearing, sliding, or load-bearing parts, consider the operating load, contact surface, speed, moisture exposure, and lubrication before selecting the material.

Nylon absorbs more moisture than most engineering plastics, which can change dimensions and slightly reduce mechanical properties. For close-tolerance parts, moving assemblies, or wet environments, allow for some material movement and test the finished part under actual service conditions when possible.
