Description
Extruded nylon 6/6 plastic sheet is an engineering thermoplastic for machined parts that need a practical balance of strength, stiffness, toughness, and wear resistance. It is often used as a lighter alternative to metal bearings, bushings, and other components that see sliding contact, repeated motion, or mechanical load, and it can reduce wear and operating noise in moving assemblies.
Nylon 6/6 has a low-friction surface and good abrasion resistance, and it machines cleanly with standard shop tools and CNC equipment. Compared with nylon 6, it generally has somewhat higher strength, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. Like other nylons, it absorbs more moisture than most engineering plastics, and that moisture can change part dimensions slightly. Allow for it when parts need tight tolerances or will see changing humidity.
The sheet is available in natural, black, and moly-filled grades. The moly-filled grade contains molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which acts as a solid lubricant to lower friction and improve wear resistance in bearing and sliding parts.
Cut tolerance: +0.0″ / −0.2″
Advantages
- Strong and rigid: suitable for load-bearing wear parts, guides, and mechanical components
- Low friction: reduces sliding resistance in moving assemblies
- Wear and abrasion resistance: used where parts see repeated contact
- Impact toughness: holds up in demanding shop, equipment, and maintenance uses
- Machinable: can be cut, drilled, routed, milled, and turned for custom parts
- Chemical resistance: resists oils, greases, fuels, and many hydrocarbons; acids can attack nylon, so verify compatibility for the specific exposure
- Electrical insulating properties: used for nonconductive mechanical and equipment parts; absorbed moisture lowers its insulating performance
Applications
- Bearings and bushings
- Gears, sprockets, rollers, and wheels
- Wear pads, guides, and slide plates
- Seals, gaskets, spacers, and washers
- Packaging machinery, material handling, and automation equipment parts
- Fixtures and fabricated machine parts
- Prototype and replacement parts for maintenance and repair work
Buying and Fabrication Notes
For bearings and other moving parts, weigh the expected load, speed, contact surface, lubrication, and operating environment when choosing between the unfilled and moly-filled grades. The sheets are not UV stabilized, so confirm suitability before using them for parts that will spend long periods outdoors.
Use sharp tools and appropriate feeds when machining nylon to reduce heat buildup and improve edge quality. Sawing, machining, and grinding create chips and dust, so follow normal shop safety practices, including eye protection and adequate ventilation. Store the material dry and clean before fabrication.
