Description
Mirrored acrylic sheet is extruded acrylic with a reflective layer on the back face, used in place of glass mirror where weight or breakage is a concern. It weighs about half as much as glass mirror of the same size and thickness, resists breakage better than glass, and is easier to cut, drill, and rout.
Acrylic mirror flexes more than glass, so the reflection is only as flat as the surface behind it. The 1⁄4″ sheet is stiffer than 1⁄8″ and holds a flatter reflection on larger panels. Some visual distortion is normal, and acrylic mirror is not suited to uses that need a precise, distortion-free reflection.
Advantages
- Lightweight: about half the weight of glass mirror of the same size and thickness
- Break resistant: more resistant to breakage than glass of equal thickness; a safer choice where broken glass is a hazard
- Reflective finish: silver and colored mirror finishes for decorative, display, and merchandising work
- Easy to fabricate: can be sawed, routed, drilled, and laser cut with methods suited to plastic
- Masked mirror face: removable masking protects the front during handling and fabrication
Applications
- Retail point-of-purchase displays and product presentations
- Signs, cut lettering, decorative panels, and design elements
- Wall accents, furniture, artwork, and craft projects
- Photography, staging, set design, and event décor
- Glass mirror replacement in bedrooms, gyms, and other indoor spaces where breakage is a concern
- Novelty items and fabricated design components
Installation and Use Notes
For the clearest reflection, mount mirrored acrylic to a smooth, rigid, flat backing such as hardboard or MDF. Uneven surfaces, overtightened fasteners, and unsupported panels bend the sheet and distort the reflected image. With screws, drill oversized holes and tighten only until snug. Some adhesives attack the mirror backing, so test on a scrap piece first.
Mirrored acrylic is for indoor use. High humidity and harsh chemicals can damage the mirror backing, and moisture can cause temporary warping, so avoid shower surrounds and other damp areas. Wear gloves when handling to prevent fingerprints, and take care not to scratch the reflective back layer. Clean the face with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth using light pressure; do not use glass cleaners, ammonia-based products, scouring pads, or solvents.
Fabrication Notes
Leave the masking in place during fabrication. Use sharp tools designed for plastics, support the sheet well, and avoid heat buildup while cutting or drilling. When drilling, back the workpiece with scrap wood to reduce chipping as the bit exits. Flame polishing is not recommended for mirrored acrylic edges.
