Description
King StarBoard® ST is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) building sheet designed for outdoor living, commercial fixtures, cabinetry, furniture, and fabricated plastic components. It combines the moisture resistance and durability of HDPE with a matte gloss finish on both sides, making it a practical alternative to wood in applications where water exposure, humidity, cleaning, and long-term appearance matter.
Manufactured by King Plastic using the K-Stran™ process, StarBoard® ST is made for improved flatness and consistency. It is 25 percent stiffer than the original King StarBoard®, which can be helpful for cabinet parts, panels, furniture components, architectural partitions, and other projects that need more rigidity than standard HDPE sheet.
This material is environmentally stabilized for outdoor use and is commonly selected for projects exposed to UV, humidity, and water. It will not rust or delaminate, does not require painting or refinishing, and can be worked with many common woodworking tools and CNC equipment when proper plastic-fabrication practices are followed.
Advantages
- Outdoor-capable HDPE: suitable for many indoor, wet-area, and outdoor applications where wood may require regular finishing
- Added stiffness: 25 percent stiffer than original King StarBoard® for more rigid panels and fabricated parts
- Scratch-resistant surface: one of King Plastic’s more scratch-resistant polymer sheets, useful for cabinetry, furniture, and high-use fixtures
- Matte gloss finish: finished on both sides for a clean appearance without painting or refinishing
- Moisture resistance: performs well around water and humidity and will not swell like wood-based panels
- Machinability: cuts, routes, drills, and profiles with standard woodworking tools, carbide tooling, and CNC routers
- Low upkeep: cleans with common detergents and appropriate cleaning methods for HDPE surfaces
Applications
- Outdoor kitchens, cabinet boxes, doors, drawers, and trim components
- Commercial case goods, counters, partitions, and fixture panels
- Furniture, tables, benches, chairs, and outdoor living projects
- Concession stands, dugout areas, lockers, kick plates, and equipment panels
- Pool-area components, storage boxes, shelving, planters, and utility panels
- Marine and wet-area fabrication where HDPE sheet is an appropriate material choice
Fabrication and Installation Notes
King StarBoard® ST works much like wood, but it should be fabricated with HDPE behavior in mind. Use sharp carbide blades or router bits, and consider O-flute tooling for CNC routing where chip evacuation is important. Pilot holes, counterbores, and countersinks are recommended for mechanical fasteners.
Adhesive bonding and painting are generally not recommended for this material. Mechanical fastening or plastic welding is typically preferred. For outdoor or wet-area assemblies, stainless steel hardware is often selected to reduce corrosion concerns around the fasteners.
Like other HDPE materials, StarBoard® ST expands and contracts with temperature changes. Leave appropriate clearance around panels, avoid trapping parts tightly between fixed surfaces, and use oversized or slotted holes where movement must be accommodated.
Care and Handling
Store sheets and cut parts flat on a level surface until fabrication or installation. During machining, leaving protective masking in place where practical can help preserve the finish. Clean everyday dirt with common detergents and a nylon brush or pad, using light pressure to avoid marring the surface.
Cut tolerance: +0.0″ / −0.2″
Matte gloss finish on both sides of the sheet.
Use standard woodworking tools: table saws, table routers, drills, blades and bits. Carbide router bits with two to four flutes are recommended.
To clean everyday dirt and stains, use ether Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Soft Scrub® or Simple Green Concentrate at full strength with a nylon scrubby or stiff nylon brush. Scrub lightly; excess force can mar the finish. Persistent stains will usually go away if you soak the area with bleach. Do not use 100% chlorine used to treat swimming pools.
Gluing is not recommended. Because King StarBoard® ST sheet products are designed to resist water and grime, they cannot be painted and the use of adhesives is not recommended. It is preferable to mechanically fasten or weld. Specialized welding equipment and rods, designed for use with polymer sheets, are available.
